With more than 30 years of insurance and consulting experience, Mike McLaughlin has seen many changes in the industry. But perhaps the most dynamic changes are occurring in the field of enterprise risk management (ERM).

As the Global leader of the Actuarial and Insurance Solutions at Deloitte Consulting LLC, Mike recognizes the importance for a rigorous credentialing process in this rapidly emerging field. Having worked in the area of ERM for over 4 years, he knows that applying actuarial science principles to a company’s ERM framework promises the most effective results.

“We know that there are many bright MBAs working in other industries helping to identify and quantify risks as well as building operational models and budgets,” explains Mike. “And I think that they’re doing a good job. But actuarial methods would just go way beyond that and take it to a new, even more powerful, effective level.”

Considering that the CERA credential is the most comprehensive and rigorous demonstration of enterprise risk management expertise available, Mike sees more business professionals being attracted to the field of enterprise risk management because of the credential.

“There’s a huge group of bright, talented young potential college entrants and graduates who would like very interesting and impactful work,” Mike says. “The CERA credential allows them to get an actuarial credential in a relatively short timeframe. And perhaps, at last, some of these candidates could have unlimited opportunities in the broad world of enterprise risk management.”
